What are the most common mistakes when growing Lion's Mane from a kit?

The three mistakes I see most often are overwatering, inconsistent temperature management, and poor air exchange. These aren't knowledge gaps—they're habits that contradict what the mushroom actually needs. Understanding why they happen is the first step to growing healthy, flavourful fruiting bodies every time.

Why do growers overwater Lion's Mane kits?

Lion's Mane needs moisture, but not saturation. The substrate in a kit arrives colonised and ready to fruit—it already holds water. When I watch growers work, the instinct is always to keep spraying: the logic being that mushrooms like dampness, so more must be better. In reality, overwatering creates standing water, which blocks oxygen and invites bacterial and mould contamination. The fruiting body itself will rot from the inside.

The right approach is a light mist once or twice daily, enough to keep the surface glistening but never dripping or pooling. If you’re seeing condensation beading on the bag or kit sides, that’s ideal. If water is running down or collecting at the base, you’ve crossed the line. A single spray bottle with a fine mist nozzle is more effective than any complicated watering system—and it gives you control and feedback every time you touch the kit.

How does temperature fluctuation affect fruiting?

Lion's Mane fruits best between 12–18°C, with 15°C being the sweet spot. Wide swings—say from a warm kitchen at 20°C during the day to an unheated room at 8°C at night—confuse the mushroom's developmental signal. The fruiting body may abort, grow slowly, or develop bruised or discoloured patches. I’ve seen kits placed on sunny windowsills or near radiators where temperature can shift 5–10°C in hours; they almost always underperform.

Consistency matters more than perfection. A cool, stable location—a north-facing shelf, a shaded corner, or an unheated spare room—is far better than a warm spot with temperature swings. If you live in a centrally heated home, avoid placing kits near vents or in direct sun. If you’re in South London where we work, autumn and winter are actually ideal growing seasons for this reason. Check your kit daily, but choose a stable spot first.

What role does air exchange play in contamination?

Poor air exchange is invisible until contamination takes hold. Lion's Mane is naturally a wood-decay fungus; it thrives in conditions where fresh air flows. A sealed or poorly ventilated kit creates a stagnant microenvironment where competing bacteria and moulds can establish faster than the mushroom can fruit. You’ll often see green or black spots appearing first at the edges of the kit or around the cut area where you harvest.

Most kits come with a breathable bag or ventilation holes designed for this purpose. Your job is to respect that design. Keep the kit out of cupboards or sealed boxes. If you’re using the kit in a humid, poorly ventilated bathroom or kitchen, move it. Open windows in the room, or position it near (not directly in) an air current. Better still, mist and then leave it undisturbed in a spot with natural air movement. Overhandling the kit also disrupts airflow around the fruiting site—less fussing, more patience, usually means better results.

How do I spot contamination early and prevent it?

Contamination almost always shows as discolouration before it spoils the whole crop. Green mould, black patches, or slimy wet areas are early warning signs. By the time the fruiting body looks visibly sick, the contamination is usually too far advanced to save. Prevention is always simpler than rescue. Clean hands, a clean work surface, and a clean spray bottle are the three non-negotiables. I emphasise this in every workshop at the Community Mycology Lab in Remakery Brixton: mushroom growing rewards attention to cleanliness in a way that most indoor plants don’t.

Once you’ve set up the kit correctly—stable temperature, light misting, good airflow—most contamination is preventable through hygiene alone. If you do see early discolouration, isolate the kit from others immediately, increase misting slightly to encourage the mushroom to fruit faster and outcompete the contaminant, and ensure fresh air is flowing. If the contamination spreads to the substrate itself (not just the surface), compost the kit rather than trying to rescue it; it will only spread to your next batch.

What harvesting habits prevent kit failure?

Timing and technique affect whether a kit will produce a second flush. Harvest Lion's Mane when the tips are just beginning to form soft spines but before they harden and lose their delicate texture—usually 7–10 days from first visible pin formation. Grasp the whole fruiting body at its base and twist gently; don’t cut with a knife, which leaves a stub that can rot and infect the substrate below.

After harvest, let the kit rest for 7–10 days in a cool place without misting. Then resume the misting routine for a second flush. Many growers harvest once and assume the kit is spent, but Lion's Mane will often produce two or even three flushes if you give it recovery time between them. Each flush tends to be smaller than the last, but the total yield from one kit can be substantial if you manage the rest periods correctly. Flavour and texture are best in the first flush, which is why timing and gentle handling matter so much for a culinary producer.

How do environment and sourcing affect kit success?

I’ve learned through working with the South London Mushroom Club and at West Norwood Feast that kit success depends heavily on where you buy and where you grow. A kit from a supplier who prioritises sterile production and proper shipping will arrive in far better condition than a cheap imported alternative that’s been sitting in a warm warehouse or exposed to temperature shock in transit. When you receive a kit, inspect it before opening: if the substrate feels rock-hard or is visibly colonised unevenly (pale spots or strange discolouration), contact the supplier. A good kit should show uniform white mycelium throughout.

Your growing environment matters equally. If you live in a very warm climate or a centrally heated flat with no cool spot, Lion's Mane kits may struggle. Conversely, a cool kitchen, a north-facing hallway, or an unheated utility room in winter is nearly ideal. Before you buy a kit, assess whether you can genuinely maintain 12–18°C and provide light daily misting. If you can’t, a different mushroom variety (Oyster, for instance, is more forgiving of warmth) might be a better fit. Honest assessment of your space prevents frustration and wasted money.
