Mushroom Cultivation Workshops

Mushroom growing workshops at Adi's Urban Mushrooms - participants preparing substrate bags and learning cultivation

Adi's Urban Mushrooms offers a range of mushroom cultivation workshops that are informative and practical. You'll have fun and learn lots about fungi and mushrooms. They start with an introductory talk in which you'll learn what mushrooms and fungi are, how they live, and their vital role in ecological systems. Adi's mission is to share mush love and knowledge, and to create shared learning experiences. Workshops take place either at the Remakery Brixton, in community gardens, or at your office.

The mushroom growing and cultivation workshops are tailored to what you'd like to learn. This can include:

Participants then engage in a practical session, in which they can either make their own take-home mushroom grow bag or create a shared mushroom growing space in a garden. Examples of outdoor mushroom cultivation for a garden include:

Duration: 3.5 hours.

Participants are provided with a handout with instructions on how to look after the grow bag or outdoor growing space, and should be able to harvest edible mushrooms after a few weeks or months (depending on the chosen method). All materials are provided, and no prior knowledge or experience is needed.

Sliding-scale tickets

We offer a sliding scale so workshops stay accessible to everyone. Support tickets cover the cost of the workshop plus a little extra to help keep these workshops accessible; Standard tickets cover the actual cost; Supported tickets are for people on income support or very low incomes; and Free tickets are reserved for voucher holders who already have a voucher.

Adi also offers tailored experiences for businesses and teams, plus a full course for people who want to grow mushrooms regularly, in which participants build their own equipment and learn about the different stages of cultivation. Contact adi@urbanmushrooms.co.uk for more information.

Guided Mushroom Foraging Walks

Guided mushroom foraging walk - a fresh-picked porcini held up in the woods

Adi has over 45 years' experience of mushroom foraging, having learned the craft from mushroom controllers in his youth. He is a member of the Association of Foragers.

He'll guide you on a foraging walk and share his passion and experience of edible mushrooms with you. Guided beginner and advanced walks take place from mid-September to mid-November, depending on the conditions.

We meet in a forest and, after an introductory and participative talk, you'll spend the afternoon (in total about 3.5 hours) on a guided foraging walk. You'll get to know a handful of choice edible mushrooms for novice foragers (and the ones to avoid). You'll learn about the vital role fungi play in a forest, their habitats, foraging tips, do's and don'ts, and foraging laws.

Travel to the meeting point is by car, or by train and cab. You can organise a lift share on WhatsApp and join Adi's Foraging Community.

I've learned over the years that there's no guarantee we'll find (m)any mushrooms. I can promise you, though, that we'll have a fun day out (see our Google Reviews).

Sliding-scale tickets

The same sliding scale applies to foraging walks. Support tickets cover the cost plus a little extra to keep walks accessible; Standard tickets cover the actual cost; Supported tickets are for people on income support or very low incomes; and Free tickets are reserved for voucher holders.

★★★★★

"I did a mushroom foraging course with Adi which was super fun. We had a great day, learned about mushrooms, found plenty of them, and took some home. I would highly recommend it. I've also tried the mushroom growing kit. It's an amazing experience watching the tiny creatures grow."

Volunteering Opportunities

Volunteers at Adi's Urban Mushrooms holding harvests and working together at the urban farm

Adi's volunteering programme offers a sanctuary for mental wellbeing, and opportunities to learn the craft of mushroom cultivation. One weekly volunteer, rebuilding after a difficult period, is now a vital part of our urban farm operations. Volunteers report an increase in confidence through nature-based work.

Community Mycology Lab and Kitchen

The fully equipped Community Mycology Lab and Kitchen - sterilisation, prep area and air filtration

Adi's Urban Mushrooms has invested all of the profits made in its first couple of years into building a state-of-the-art mushroom lab and kitchen. I want to help build a sustainable, local, circular food economy, where people from all walks of life can bring mushrooms into their homes, their meals, and their wellbeing routines.

As many of you know, mushrooms offer incredible benefits for physical and mental health - and growing them in a city, especially on waste materials, is not only affordable and fun but great for the planet too. If you'd like to explore how this mission has unfolded, you can read more in my earlier blog, Mush Love in Action: Growing a Mushroom Movement in South London. Our Community Mycology Lab will launch in 2026, so you can take your mushroom growing to the next level.

Collaboration with Artists

Collaboration with artists working with mycelium as a material and inspiration

Adi has collaborated with and supported a number of artists in joint projects, and supported those who want to work with mycelium as a material or as inspiration for their cultural practice.

Examples include a collaboration with Laura Selby, a sonic artist, in a design process for the South London Mushroom Community Garden, together with the South London Mushroom Club and South London Urban Growers.

He also supports art students and practitioners experimenting with mushrooms - for sonic work, jewellery, sculptures, furniture, and conceptual art.

South London Mushroom Club

South London Mushroom Club - monthly gatherings, foraging, shared meals and making

Adi founded the South London Mushroom Club in April 2023, and it has been run by a small core group since 2025. The purpose of the club is to build an open, welcoming community around fungi - spanning science, skills, creativity, food, and culture. The club exists to connect people with different perspectives and levels of experience, and to make it easy to learn, share, and do things together. Monthly events (generally on the second Thursday of every month) are donation-based.

The club is for:

Our annual programme

Designed and coordinated by the Core Group and shaped by members' interests, we run events around these themes:

Beyond the meetups, we connect online (on WhatsApp) so the club isn't just a monthly event.
