For foragers who already know the basics

You can tell an oyster from an elm leaf and you have a season or two behind you. This walk goes deeper: the groups that reward closer study, the identification details that separate a good find from a mistake, and the seasonal reading that tells you where to look before you set off.

Species we go deeper on

The autumn woodland gives us boletes and their kin, the trickier gilled genera, and the species where careful people still get caught by lookalikes. What we find dictates the afternoon - that is the nature of the woods - but the method is constant: field features first, hand lens second, certainty always.

Identification skills

Spore prints and what they rule out. Smell, bruising and staining reactions. Habitat as evidence rather than decoration. Why two mushrooms that look identical in a photograph are unmistakable in the hand once you know what to check. This is the part of foraging that took me decades - and it is teachable in an afternoon once you have the foundations.

Frequently asked questions

How advanced is advanced?

If you have done a beginners walk with me, or you have a couple of seasons of careful foraging behind you, you will be comfortable. It is about depth of identification, not fitness or speed.

Do you identify what I bring along?

If you have a find you want examined, bring it (whole, including the base). Teaching from a real find is the best lesson there is.

Is the advanced walk harder terrain?

No - the same woodland at the same pace. The difference is in the material, not the walking.

Go deeper this season

Advanced walks run within the same autumn dates - pick a mid-season date for the richest woods.
